Have either the Chiefs or Eagles won the Super Bowl before?
Yes, that is one of the many reasons as to why this year’s Super Bowl has been so eagerly anticipated as it features two teams who have won the Super Bowl recently.
Kansas City have won the Super Bowl twice with their victories coming in 1970 and 2020. They also competed in the 2021 Super Bowl but were defeated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This will be their sixth appearance in the grand showpiece.
The Philadelphia Eagles have won the Super Bowl on just one occasion – with that victory coming back in 2018 when they famously beat the New England Patriots in a thriller of a game.
This will be the Eagles first appearance back in a Super Bowl since then and will be the fourth time in their history that they will compete in the season finale.
How did both teams get here?
To reach the Super Bowl, both teams had to qualify for the AFC and NFC playoffs. Through seventeen games of the regular season both teams finished with a 14-3 record, making them the most successful teams in their respective conferences.
Earning the top seed for the Playoffs, both the Chiefs and the Eagles had to win two games to reach the Super Bowl. The Chiefs beat both the Jacksonville Jaguars and Cincinnati Bengals to reach this stage, whilst the Eagles had to navigate past the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers to earn a Super Bowl berth.
Who is expected to win?
Through the regular season it looked like both the Chiefs and Eagles were the best two teams in football and that notion was proved correct when both teams advanced through the playoffs. This is the first time since 2017 that both the top seeds from the AFC and NFC conferences have made it this far and many believe that this is too tight a game to call.
It is widely considered that the Eagles have the more talented team but the Chiefs can boast one of the best players in the entire NFL in the form of Patrick Mahomes. Many believe this match will go down to the wire.
Who else should we look out for?
Wherever you look on Sunday, stars will be all over the field. For the Philadelphia Eagles look for the trio of A.J Brown, Davonte Smith and Dallas Goedert all to play major roles. The Kansas City Chiefs will rely on Travis Kelce to cement his position as one of the best red zone threats in the NFL.
From a defensive point of view, look out for Hassan Reddick of the Eagles and Chris Jones of the Chiefs. Both on their day can be unblockable and will have a huge say on who wins this contest.
Who coaches the teams?
This year’s Super Bowl will see two coaches lead out their teams at very different stages of their NFL careers. The Chiefs are led by Andy Reid, who at 64 is looking to guide his team to their second Super Bowl under his leadership. Long regarded as one of the best coaches in the world, Reid is one of the most popular coaches in the NFL.
The Philadelphia Eagles are led by Nick Sirianni who at 41 is 23 years Reid’s junior. Sirianni took the Eagles job back in 2021 and this will be the first time he has coached in the Super Bowl.
How many people will watch the game?
It is estimated that over 200 million people will watch the game in the USA.
