Auston was born September 17, 1997 in San Ramon, California. Aged 2, he started attending Phoenix Coyotes games. His childhood heroes were Shane Doan and Daniel Brière. As a child, he used to play hockey and baseball. Matthews was better in baseball but decided to go for hockey due to the slow pace of baseball. Auston played in the 2010 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the Kharkov minor ice hockey team.

In the year 2012, Matthews was drafted 57th overall by the Western Hockey League’s (WHL) Everett Silvertips. But, he decided to play for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program. He played in the league and gained the attention of scouts. In 2015,  Matthews won the USA Hockey Bob Johnson Award for excellence in international competition. Furthermore, He was named the most valuable player at the 2015 World U18 Championships.

He failed to make the cut of NHL Draft 2015 due to young age. He signed a one year contract with Swiss National League A (NLA) side ZSC Lions. Auston finished the season with 2nd top scorer in the ZSC Lions and 10th in the league. He also won the NLA Rising Star Award.

In 2016 June, he was selected first overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs. Since then he has been a part of the NHL All-Star Game on four occasions i.e. 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2024. Auston Matthews won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy last season. It is awarded to the league’s top scorer.
